What inspired you to create this website or entity?

City Mission grew out of a deep desire to speak up for people whose voices are not heard in our society. In reality, they are the backbone of our community. Witnessing the injustice around us fueled this desire further, and City Mission was born. We see people who come to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their families; many struggle to make ends meet. Young people who are simply trying to find their place in the world, and some who have fallen on hard times. Countless needs exist just outside our doorstep and we cannot turn a blind eye to our community. We believe that when you open your heart, love changes your mind and drives you to shed light and hope wherever you go. We intend the use the website as a platform to raise awareness of our mission, funnel volunteers, and in the future, maybe even provide an educational resource hub.

How does your website or entity represent or contribute to the local community or borough which you represent?

Our mission is to serve the vulnerable people in our community, specifically youth, immigrants and the homeless. Some practical ways we are doing this is through our youth program Get Your Life Together (GYLT). We invite different professionals who are passionate about what they do, to inspire bright young people to go after their dreams. We’re also on the cusp of launching our internship program that offers young people an opportunity to get relevant work experience through City Mission. Another major group that we aim to serve in our community are the immigrants. Our work ranges from assistance with filling out tax and immigration forms, access to free and/or affordable healthcare, resume workshops, and even opportunities for them to showcase a diverse array of food from their culture through our local food fair. City Mission’s third focus is the homeless population. Since 2015, we’ve been running the City Mission Care Group (CMCG) program, where we tutor children at the family shelter. We also work to spread awareness and equip our community to get involved with this issue through our partnership with the Department of Homeless Services. What ties this all together in the end, are the relationships we build. To care for the people we serve, and to walk alongside each other through life. This is our city, and this is our mission.
